Access and display are different choices
On January 28, 2025, VRChat opened age verification to VRC+ subscribers through Persona. Its announcement separated two choices: eligible adults could enter age-verified group instances, while showing a verification badge on their profile remained optional. Hiding that badge did not remove access to those instances. VRChat said the check compared government-issued identification with the person submitting it. These details matter because an avatar’s public appearance, a profile’s visible markers and the evidence used to admit someone to a room are three different things.
For a social avatar platform, the challenge is structural. A character can obscure offline age, while a mixed-age room can still contain activities and conversations that need meaningful safeguards. Verification can be part of a response, but it is not a substitute for moderation, clear reporting, community norms or careful design of discovery and private contact.
What should a badge be asked to prove?
A badge can be useful without becoming a general certificate of trustworthiness. Knowing that an account passed an age check does not tell a host whether its owner respects boundaries, credits artists or treats newcomers well. Communities can explain the narrow purpose of their admission rule and keep conduct standards visible after someone enters. They can also avoid pressuring members to display a badge publicly when the system already allows private eligibility. That distinction preserves some choice over how a person presents themselves while acknowledging that a particular room has an access condition.
The announcement is evidence that VRChat was pursuing age verification. It is not independent evidence of effectiveness, privacy practice, error rates or community response. This dispatch holds those questions open rather than turning a policy announcement into a claim that safety has been delivered.
