What happened
VRChat's 2025.2.2 release moved its Avatar Marketplace from an earlier creator-economy proposal into the live client. The Avatars tab gained an Explore route where a person could browse creator uploads, try one on and purchase it with VRChat Credits. The product page also presents full avatars as creator-made goods, with categories and a try-on step rather than a conventional file download.
That placement matters because it shortens the distance between encountering a look and inhabiting it. A complete avatar can carry a recognizable face, body, style and set of expressive behaviors. Selling that package inside the same interface where identity is performed turns representation into an immediate platform transaction and gives avatar makers a more direct route to customers.
The human implication
Convenience concentrates responsibility. Buyers need intelligible previews, compatibility information and a clear account record for something they may use as a durable social identity. Creators need discoverability and enforcement that does not make a copied model easier to sell than an original one. The platform also decides which aesthetics become visible through categories, curation and search.
The official notes establish that the market went live and describe the in-client purchase flow. They do not disclose seller outcomes, moderation accuracy, refund behavior or how often buyers keep using purchased avatars. Useful follow-up would examine attribution, takedown handling and what happens to a person's represented identity if an item is removed or a seller leaves the program. It should also show a buyer, before payment, which platform features, tracking modes and performance limits the chosen model supports.
Sources & limits
VRChat documents the live in-client marketplace and purchase path; creator income, moderation quality and long-term buyer use remain unmeasured here.
