What happened
COVER and PARCO organized “SUISEI ARCHIVES,” Hoshimachi Suisei's first solo exhibition, at Ikebukuro PARCO from May 16 to June 9, 2025 and Nagoya PARCO from June 27 to July 13. Five named sections traced her encounter with music and career to date. The project also included an exhibition-only early screening period for material connected to the “Kireigoto” music video.
The exhibition moved a virtual performer's history out of a feed and into rooms that visitors navigated with their bodies. An archive format can give digital work sequence, scale and institutional weight. It can also decide which versions of a changing persona count as the official story, especially when costumes, songs, illustrations and recorded appearances have circulated across many platforms.
The human implication
For virtual artists, preservation is unusually complicated. A model file is only one component; performance depends on motion, voice, compositing, music, platform context and audience memory. A gallery can preserve selected outputs, but future documentation also needs credits, technical metadata and clear custody for the elements that made an appearance possible.
COVER's announcement establishes the locations, dates, organizers and five-part exhibition plan. It does not provide a full object list, explain archival selection or record visitor interpretations. The human question is who gets to narrate continuity when a performed identity spans years of technical revisions. A responsible archive should make production change legible without dissolving the artist into tools and assets. Catalogues that identify model versions, designers and performance sources could preserve those changes without turning a living career into one frozen image.
