
Who is in the room?
Tiger Ji, Brianna Cochran and Yuhang Zhao developed VRBubble to convey nearby avatar activity through audio. The prototype divides proximity into three zones and lets users combine sound cues, spoken notifications and real-world effects. In a study with 12 people with visual impairments, it improved awareness during navigation and supported identification in both navigation and conversation tasks. The authors also report greater distraction in crowded settings.
The crowd changes the interface
A platform can spend enormous effort making an avatar visually distinctive while offering little way to notice that it has arrived. This study puts that missing encounter at the center. Identity is useful only if people can perceive it in the situation where they are trying to interact. A detailed model that remains socially invisible to another participant has not solved the whole representation problem.
The crowd limitation matters as much as the positive result. Imagine trying to listen to a friend while every nearby movement triggers another announcement. Making hidden information audible can create a new competition for attention. A better question than how much the interface can say is what the listener needs to know right now. That points toward adjustable detail, clear priorities and ways to quiet a busy environment without losing an important approach.
Accessibility as social timing
For world builders and event producers, the practical implication is to examine the arrival, the conversation and the exit as separate moments. Different information may matter in each. A useful review includes the busiest part of the venue, not only a calm demonstration room. VRBubble remains evidence about a research prototype and a bounded study; this article does not claim it is available in every social platform. Its larger editorial contribution is a sharper definition of presence: people need a usable way to notice one another.
