What happened
Holotech Studios launched Animaze into Steam Early Access on 17 November 2020. The company described it as FaceRig’s official successor and retained the core promise of streaming, video chatting or recording through an animated character. The living Steam page distinguishes that Early Access date from the later 1.0 release and describes support for both 2D and 3D avatars.
Succession is the important historical fact. Avatar performers build workflows around cameras, model formats, virtual outputs and purchased assets; replacing one application is closer to changing production infrastructure than installing an ordinary filter. Holotech’s announcement addressed continuing FaceRig availability and rewards for existing owners, evidence that continuity mattered to the transition. It does not establish whether every old model or setup moved cleanly.
The human implication
Creator tools hold parts of a public identity that viewers may never see directly. Calibration settings influence expression, importers determine which body can load, and a virtual camera decides where the performance can travel. When a tool reaches end of life, those invisible dependencies become personal: the creator may have to rebuild the way their face reaches an audience.
Animaze’s launch shows why migration belongs in avatar history. A successor must serve new users while giving established performers a credible route forward. Model compatibility, saved settings, licensing and continued redownload access can matter as much as new visual features. The official posts outline Holotech’s intended transition but cannot prove it worked equally for everyone. Later firsthand or technical evidence would be needed to evaluate that experience. The launch record establishes the handoff and the questions a durable creator ecosystem should answer.
