A puppet before a rigging lesson

Adobe's Starter home screen offers a row of illustrated puppets below an invitation to perform. That arrangement tells the story of the mode: choose a character first, then bring it to life. Adobe says Character Animator 22.5 introduced Starter mode in June 2022. It simplified the interface around performing, recording and exporting, with sample puppets ready to use. A maker could begin with camera and microphone input or imported speech, add poses and emotions from controls, and export a video. Adobe's later help page also explains a free-account path and the split between Starter and Pro.

This was a different milestone from Character Animator's early face-tracking preview. The older product established that layered art could respond to a performer. Starter mode changed the first encounter with that idea. Someone curious about an animated persona did not have to begin by naming every Photoshop layer, building a rig or arranging a complex timeline. They could see a character react, record a small scene and decide whether deeper authoring was worth learning.

What the short path leaves open

Ready-made puppets are useful precisely because they make a test cheap in time and attention. They are also a creative constraint. A sample character may demonstrate timing, voice and gesture, but it will not automatically carry the distinctive drawing, costume or visual identity a creator wants for a longer-running avatar. Adobe's documentation puts custom layered-art construction and more extensive timeline controls in Pro mode. It also says Starter projects can move to Pro, while Pro projects cannot be opened in Starter.

That one-way project path is worth noticing before a creator builds a series around a template. The fastest first clip and the most flexible production pipeline are different goals. Starter mode gave the first one a clearer doorway; it did not remove the later work of designing, rigging and directing a particular character. The June 2022 release is dated by Adobe's version note, while the detailed workflow and account information come from a living help page updated later. They should be checked again before anyone relies on them as current purchasing or compatibility guidance. The enduring editorial point is narrower: moving the first performance closer to the start can help a person learn what they actually need from an avatar tool.
