What the stable release changed

A blue-haired model fills the VRoid Studio canvas while hair guides and material controls surround the face. That is the kind of detailed editing this tool asks of its maker. On 31 October 2021, pixiv released VRoid Studio's stable version 1.0 after years of beta development. The announcement described a rebuilt character workbench, with face parameters no longer divided into male and female sets, additional facial components, more than 350 preset items, adjustable accessories and an outfit overlay feature. These are changes to the choices available while constructing a character, rather than a new place to display one.

The stable label also hid a migration task. VRoid said models made in beta versions needed conversion before they could be edited in the new version, and acknowledged that conversion might require touch-ups. Its notice also said the release did not support the pixivFACTORY 3D-print link available in certain beta versions. A creator carrying a familiar character forward therefore had two questions: what new expressions could the editor make, and what details might need repairing after conversion? A version milestone is useful only if the work already invested in a character can survive it.

Why the editor matters to an avatar

Unifying face controls opened combinations that a binary preset split could make awkward. The point isn't that one slider determines identity. It is that a model maker can mix traits deliberately, compare the result on the canvas and keep adjusting. Accessories and layered clothing likewise turn a base body into a character with choices about silhouette, costume and recognizability. A pair of ears or a second garment can be a small visual decision, but it may be the detail an audience remembers.

The migration caveat is equally revealing. Avatars are ongoing creative projects: their faces, textures, clothing and exported files may already appear in performances or other apps. When an editor changes its internal model, a conversion button is a bridge, not proof of perfect continuity. The sensible retrospective reading of 1.0 is a broader authoring vocabulary paired with a real maintenance cost for existing makers. The release notice establishes the feature set and the stated conversion limits; it does not establish how every individual model converted or how the current editor behaves in 2026.
