What happened
Sony announced a February 2024 software update for mocopi, its six-sensor mobile motion-capture system. The update added a PC connection path for VRChat and integration with SlimeVR, alongside support for importing Avaturn avatars. Sony also described workflow changes including simultaneous motion-data saving and video recording, plus livestream-oriented features. The significant part is the pipeline: a person's movement could pass from wearable sensors through a PC workflow into a social avatar without requiring an optical studio.
A lighter setup can move full-body performance out of specialist rooms and into bedrooms, rehearsal spaces and temporary venues. It also changes what creators have to manage. Sensor placement, wireless conditions, calibration and avatar rig compatibility all become part of a live performance. When those layers work unevenly, the audience may read a technical artifact as the performer's gesture.
The human implication
More accessible capture can expand who gets to perform with a whole body, especially when a headset and hand controllers leave the legs inferred or absent. Yet six visible sensors are still a material demand: they have a price, need charging and assume they can be worn in the intended places. Accessibility depends on bodies, clothing, mobility and the surrounding space as much as on the advertised connection method.
Sony's announcement supports the planned software features and the stated February timing. It does not independently measure tracking accuracy, latency, comfort or parity with other systems. This account therefore treats mocopi as a meaningful change in capture routing rather than a proven replacement for every setup. The practical question is whether a performer can understand and recover from tracking failure while retaining control of how the avatar's movement is interpreted.
