What happened

VRChat announced the Bigscreen Beyond 2 VRChat Edition in July 2025 and described an optional Beyond 2e configuration with integrated eye tracking. The post said the tracking trains on a user’s eyes, uses their GPU, and translates pupil movement onto the VRChat avatar. It also described adjustable IPD, pancake optics, micro-OLED displays, an Audio Strap option, Lighthouse 2.0 base-station requirements and SteamVR-controller compatibility. These are hardware specifications, but their editorial interest lies in a small social gesture: where a character appears to look.

Eye movement is one of the quickest ways people judge attention. Bringing it into an avatar can make a conversation feel more responsive, while increasing the sensitivity of the data and calibration involved. It also creates a new inequality of expression: an avatar can have a more visibly attentive face if its performer has access to particular equipment and a setup that works for them.

The human implication

Expressive capture should not become a test of sincerity. Someone using a controller, a desktop client or a different headset can still be present in a conversation even if their avatar’s pupils do less. The best community norm is to treat tracked detail as an optional performance channel, not a hierarchy of realness. Creators and venues can also consider how hardware-specific features read to people who cannot see or use them.

VRChat’s partnership post supports the claimed hardware configuration and stated tracking design. It does not independently establish accuracy, privacy properties, comfort, or a causal improvement in social connection. This account treats eye tracking as a new representational input whose social meaning will depend on practice, not a proven upgrade to personhood.
